Octopus 3: Level 1 - Course Criteria

This Test should be taken in shallow water, buoyancy aids may Not be used unless otherwise stated.
Candidates Must pass all sections to be awarded the badge.

1. Answer two water safety questions

2. Perform a sit and swivel entry

3. Push and glide on the front then swim 2 metres - pupils choice of stroke

4. Push and glide on the back then swim 2 metres backstroke

5. Swim on the front for 5 metres: pupils choice of stroke

6. Swim on the back for 5 metres

7. Fully submerge below the surface

8. Hold the "rail" and breathe rhythmically for 6 cycles

9. Scull headfirst for 3 metres

10. Identify objects underwater

11. Perform a mushroom float

12. As pupils will be expected to swim out of their depth in the next class – Goldfish 1,

we require pupils to have the competence to swim in the main pool.
To ensure safety the following additional test is required to progress up to Goldfish 1.

1. Swim on front & back main pool to deep-water steps and back - 1 metre from side
